City Quay, 8 Thomas More Street, Wapping, E1W 1AS

DEVELOPMENT

St Katharine Docks consist of two marinas or ‘basins’. Along the north west and north east sides of the east basin stands City Quay. City Quay is a gated residential development with private landscaped gardens, and it contains more than 209 apartments.

City Quay consists of a number of blocks of between 6 and 9 storeys in height. They are: Teal Court, Sanderling Lodge, Sandpiper Court, Shearwater Court, Swan Court, Jacana Court, Merganser Court, Cormorant Lodge, Osprey Court, Harlequin Court and Turnstone House.

City Quay was built by Queensway Quay Development Co and Taylor Woodrow in 1995-97. The original design for City Quay was by Norman & Dawburn, but another firm, John Robertson Architects, did the detailed design work. City Quay won the National Home Builders Design Award in 1999.

According to Norman & Dawburn, the design for City Quay was intended to convey "the character of the…early 19th century warehouses…in a contemporary way”.

The buildings of City Quay are built in yellow brick. with two and three storey penthouses projecting above the roofline.

A conservation report from the Council described City Quay this way: “The elevations are enlivened by recesses and projecting sections and with modern ‘warehouse motifs’, including bays dominated by glazing, balconies and a reference to quay level arcading with double height columnation.” And they concluded: “Although the architecture is very different from its predecessor, it is bold, frames the east basin well and makes a positive contribution to the character of the modern Docks.”

MANAGEMENT

In 1996 the freeholder of City Quay, St Katharine by the Tower Limited, granted a 999 year lease of CIty Quay to St Katharine's Estate Management Company Limited. Taylor Woodrow Capital Developments Limited acquired this lease at some point, and in 2004 they sold it to the flat owners of City Quay, who set up City Quay (London) Limited to hold the lease. This company is now the immediate landlord of the individual flats in City Quay.

There is also another company, The City Quay Management Company Limited, which was a party as management company to the flat leases when they were originally granted. So this company has a permanent role, as stipulated in the flat leases, for management of the City Quay estate.

The artist was stumped. No inspiration. He sketched out some ideas. No good. he crumpled up the bits of paper and threw them at his paper basket. 'Hold on. The ideas are no good, but those crumpled up bits of paper are rather interesting. I'll sculpt them! Now all I need is some big sheets of metal and one of those crushing machines they use on old cars, and I'm all done!' (This is my theory.)
